My topic

My research question is: How did tensions at the Yalta Conference in February 1945 come back and become larger during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States? This is a very important topic in both United States and world history. The Cold War was a major event that took place between the Soviet Union and the United States between the fall of the Grand Alliance and the fall of communism in the USSR. It represented the struggle between capitalism and communism in the world during that time.

 The Yalta conference was a meeting during the Grand Alliance that was very important in the alliance. It also had a strong impact on the Cold War. Agreements and disagreements at Yalta ended up becoming large issues and struggles between the two nations during the Cold War. The agreement of a new United Nations organization ended up not working out very well. The temporary division and occupation of Germany resulted in the building of the Berlin Wall, which lasted for nearly thirty years. The basic policies agreed on for Eastern European countries were interpreted differently by the two nations and resulted in further struggle between communism and capitalism.

Reading Response to The Firm

I have covered a lot of new information in The Firm.  Mitch has started working and works 100 hour weeks! He has passed the bar exam with the highest score. He seems to be doing extremely well at the firm, but then something strange happens. While he is eating lunch by himself, an FBI agent approaches him and tells him some veery strange stuff about the firm. He reports this to Lamar Quin and Lamar reports it to the higher ups. They explain to Mitch that this is not true. There is an example of dramatic irony in this book. As a reader I know that this stuff is true because there have been scenes proving it true. Mitch looks very naive to me because I know this. Grisham does a very good job chapter to chapter in this book. He will say something at the end that makes you want to read more into the next chapter. My reaction to the portion that I read this week could be described as disgusted. Respond to passage from LOTF pg 143

On page 143, Simon is talked to by the Lord of the Flies. The lord of the flies is really just a dead pig head. It is very debatable whether this is a hallucination on Simon's part or real. I believe that it is real in this story because it is symbolism of Simon as a Jesus-like figure. The lord of the flies says stuff like,"I'm warning you, I'm going to get angry." He has a bad temper and is very symbolic of Satan tempting Jesus. Another thing he says is "I'm the reason why it's no go." This shows that the beast has been interacting in the island all along. This gives us a lot of insight to Jack and the others' motives. This shows us that Satan may be acting on their behalf. Even if this is a hallucination, it is still very important to the story.
