Last Sunday, the whole baseball world was shocked as Miami Marlins all-star pitcher Jose Fernandez tragically died in a boating accident. He died at 24 years of age and his life was finally starting to come together. Jose defected from Cuba on a small raft at the age of 15 with his mom. She nearly drowned in pitch-black waters on the way to Miami, but Jose saved her. Jose was an excellent pitcher and he was in his 3rd year with the Marlins, already with a National League Rookie of the Year title under his belt.
I am a huge baseball fan and this death took me by surprise. I had watched Jose plenty and I will always remember him as an animated guy who I looked forward to watching for years to come. He had his whole life ahead of him, he was about to sign a huge contract most likely, and death took him so young. This teaches me that you must value every day that you are on this Earth because it could be your last. You don't always have a slow decline, sometimes you are in the prime of your life and death takes you by chance. It makes me very sad to think about what Jose could have done if he had lived a long life. He would have been a star, on and off the field.
