Reading Response to The Firm by John Grisham

I have just started reading The Firm, but I have ready plenty of Grisham novels before and enjoyed every one of them. I like what I have read so far. I have mostly just covered the introduction and am beginning to get in the rising action. So far, it is about a young man named Mitchell McDeere who is just finishing upload school. He has many offers from some very good law firms, but his best offer seems to be from a firm in Memphis. He accepts the offer and moves to Memphis with his wife Abby.

Grisham has already used some interesting ways of writing in this novel. An example of that is when he writes about a private conversation that is going on that Mitch does not know about. This looks like it could create some dramatic irony later on in the story. The most interesting part of the story for me so far is the private conversation about surveillance that goes on in the firm. From what I can tell so far, I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading John Grisham, who enjoy reading mystery, and those who enjoy books about the practice of law.

    I liked your word choice and how you made a hypothesis about what is to come in the book. I also liked how you told the reader the genre of the book so that they can decide whether they want to read The Firm.

Respond to passage from LOTF pg 143

On page 143, Simon is talked to by the Lord of the Flies. The lord of the flies is really just a dead pig head. It is very debatable whether this is a hallucination on Simon's part or real. I believe that it is real in this story because it is symbolism of Simon as a Jesus-like figure. The lord of the flies says stuff like,"I'm warning you, I'm going to get angry." He has a bad temper and is very symbolic of Satan tempting Jesus. Another thing he says is "I'm the reason why it's no go." This shows that the beast has been interacting in the island all along. This gives us a lot of insight to Jack and the others' motives. This shows us that Satan may be acting on their behalf. Even if this is a hallucination, it is still very important to the story.

Hits and Misses

In English this year, I have had some ups and downs. Overall, I have done well. My favorite piece of writing was my personal narrative. I felt that it was something I really got into and therefore it was very well-written. It was one of those pieces of writing that you keep revising and revising even when it might be perfect. I also felt very good about my research paper. I really put in the time throughout all the steps of my research and paid attention to citations, resulting in a good final draft. The one piece of writing I did not enjoy this year was the literary analysis. I think a lot of the reason for this is because I was sick of Lord of The Flies. I did not want to analyze it anymore. I also did not enjoy this as much because it was close to the end of a semester. I think I was busy with exams and didn't pay as much attention to this. Overall, what I have learned is to pick topics that interest you. That will make your writing much better.
